Designing Of The Victorian Building In Canada
Quite a few people think of Victorian as a style, but this is not correct From 1835 and 1900 there were many types of construction built and 'Victorian' architecture encompasses them all. There are common things to look out for, but with the multitude of styles used it is hard to say it is a particular style. Motifs from Classical and Gothic appearance are incorporated on buildings made of brick. stone and timber are the most common features to look for.
In Ontario, if you would like to see lots of Victorian buildings then you need to look at the houses. Whether it was a large farm in the country, a small worker's cottage or a town house in a growing urban centre like Toronto, the residences could flaunt good solid craftsmanship and decorative touches. The typical Victorian house builder wanted to ‘dress up’ the house with frills, swirls, patterns and features. These decorations were not necessarily liked by everyone, with some Europeans feeling that the designs were over the top and cluttered. The end result looked good, regardless of the fact that there were completely contrasting architectural styles over the years.
The Cabbagetown Victorian Homes are here
The first builders of Toronto had divergent tastes with fantastic imaginations, unlike the builders today who tend to build the same type of property at every site, with little difference in style between two homes. These planners began looking north of Queen Street for building lots in the 1830’s, and noticed that the land north of Queen and west of Parliament had been logged and cleared for farming. These empty ‘park lots’ would ultimately house the properties of some of York’s (as Toronto was formerly known) most prominent officials.
In Cabbagetown the first types of Toronto Victorian architecture were farm houses as well as some cottages. Land split into a grid design of streets by John Howard, were the first building lots to be marketed in 1845. Buyers generally purchased narrow building lots that were between 15 and 20 feet wide, which made attached or row houses the most practical housing type. There is a home on Sherbourne street which didn't conform to the normal house build; that was Allandale which is found at number 241 and is a rather extravagant Victorian example. The residence boasts a large rustic porch, with an fancy trim and two-toned decorative brick work; the owner being Enoch Turner, the brewer, who had it built in the late 1840's. This house is not the only example of early Victorian construction in the area; 424 Ontario Street with it's gingerbread trim threatening to overshadow the delicacy of the design, is without doubt worth having a look at.
