Ruins to Visit When Spending Holidays to Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol is located south of Spain in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The region has many towns that dot the Mediterranean coastline of the Malaga province. Once a series of tranquil fishing settlements, Costa del Sol is now a thriving tourist destination.

Aside from its world-class beaches, luxurious hotels and resorts, and superb visitor facilities, Costa del Sol is also known for an unusually large number of carefully preserved ruins that are scattered all over the place. This is not surprising considering that the settlement of Costa del Sol dates back to the Bronze Age. Since then, Costa del Sol has been colonized by foreign cultures such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors.

If you are planning to spend your holidays to Costa del Sol, set aside a schedule to visit these ruins, for they will give you a glimpse of the region's ancient history. Here are just some of these ruins.

1. The Daimalos Minaret
This historic minaret was erected on an old mosque called the Minaret of Daimalos. It is one of the oldest minarets in Spain and is considered a significant historic monument by the Junta de Andalucia. The structure is constructed out of handmade brick and masonry.

2. The Arabic Bathhouses
This ancient facility in Ronda was constructed more than 7 centuries ago. Recent excavations showed three chambers of the bathhouse for cold, warm, and hot baths. Semicircular arches join together the three chambers, and over them are barrel-vaulted roofs. These roofs feature star-shaped windows that filter sunlight, creating a gentle and relaxing effect that encourages rest. Ancient boilers and water pipes are also preserved.

3. Calzada Romana
Located at the borders of Monda, this stone road, which was built 20 centuries ago during Roman times, was utilized as a pathway to transport oil and grain to the port of Malaka. The remnants of the stone slabs that mark the road are very well preserved.

4. Campo Santo de Casabermeja
This old cemetery in Casabermeja is quite unique because of its whitewashed mausoleums, tombs, and pinnacles. The ruins are beautifully preserved, and the place has been designated as a national monument in 1980.

Include visits to these awesome structures in your holiday destinations to Costa del Sol. Book your trip through Travel Republic.
